Jeddah is the gateway for Makkah — King Abdulaziz International sits roughly 60–90 minutes from the Haram by road, and it is where most Umrah traffic lands. Madinah suits travellers who begin there and continue to Makkah afterwards. Compare fares to both before deciding: the difference is often smaller than the cost and the hours of the intercity transfer between the two cities.
Ramadan is the busiest period on every Umrah route, and fares begin climbing well before the month starts. School holidays in your own country matter almost as much. Allowances vary more between carriers on these routes than the ticket price suggests, and a cheaper fare with less baggage frequently is not cheaper overall — particularly on the way home, when Zamzam and gifts take up room you had not planned for. Check what is included before you compare.
Many pilgrims change into Ihram before boarding or during the flight, as the aircraft passes the Miqat. Carriers serving Umrah routes are used to this and most make an announcement. Keep the rest of your clothing accessible for the journey home.
The part of the journey that most often goes wrong is the last hour of it. Arrivals halls at Jeddah are busy, you will have luggage and possibly children, and the taxi rank is the worst place to start negotiating.
