Jeddah Airport to Makkah by Private Car

Almost every Umrah journey starts on this road. You land at Jeddah after a long flight, you are ninety kilometres from the Haram, and the first decision you make in Saudi Arabia is how to cover them. This page is about doing that in a car you booked before you left home, for a price agreed before you land.

What it costs

One fixed fare for the vehicle, not per seat, plus airport parking at cost.

Note what the step between classes actually costs. A sedan to an SUV is SAR 20 for two more seats. A sedan to a van is SAR 70 for seven more — so a family of seven travelling together pays about SAR 30 each, less than half what a couple pays in a sedan. Groups are where this pricing is generous.

Finding your driver at Jeddah

King Abdulaziz International is not one building. Terminal 1 opened in 2019 and handles most scheduled traffic; the older North Terminal is still in use; and the tent-roofed Hajj Terminal is a separate facility again, used for pilgrim charters in season. The site covers something like 112 square kilometres, so walking between them is not a plan.

Tell us your terminal when you book. With your flight number we can usually work it out, but on a charter in Hajj season the flight number alone does not always say which building you will walk out of.

Your driver waits inside arrivals with a name sign. If your flight is late, we see it and he waits — there is no charge for that, and no need to message anyone from the aircraft.

If you are on the Makkah Route Initiative

Some pilgrims clear immigration, biometrics and baggage tagging in their home country before flying. In the 1447 AH season that scheme carried 388,694 pilgrims from seventeen ports across ten countries. If you are on it, you can be at the kerb within minutes of the aircraft door opening rather than an hour later.

Say so when you book. It changes when the driver should be standing there, and there is no sense in either of you waiting for the other.

The checkpoint, and who may enter Makkah

Non-Muslims cannot enter Makkah. Not the Haram, the city. Saudi Arabia's official tourism service states it plainly, and it is enforced on this exact road at Al-Shumaisi, a checkpoint staffed around the clock by police with Red Crescent and Civil Defense alongside. A recent upgrade took it to sixteen lanes with smart screening and a building housing ten government agencies.

We say this here because people do book the transfer without knowing, and being turned back at Al-Shumaisi after a ten-hour flight is a miserable way to find out. Madinah is different — non-Muslims may enter the city, though not the Prophet's Mosque and its haram area.

In Hajj season there is a second layer. Entry to Makkah becomes permit-only, and vehicles without the right authorisation are turned away at the city entrances. For Hajj 1447 that started on 13 April 2026 and Umrah permits were suspended from 18 April to 31 May. Those dates move every year with the lunar calendar — do not plan against the ones above. The train, honestly

The Haramain High Speed Railway has a station connected directly to Terminal 1 — reportedly the largest airport-linked rail station in the world, six platforms, over 105,000 square metres. Economy to Makkah is SAR 65 at the published base fare, business SAR 101.40, and the run is quick.

For a couple travelling light, that is a good deal and we will say so. Two economy tickets cost SAR 130 against SAR 260 for the car.

Three things decide it the other way. The gates close ten minutes before departure and ticket sales twenty minutes before, so a slow immigration queue can cost you the train you booked. Excess baggage is not carried at all — an Umrah family with four large cases does not fit the allowance. And the train leaves you at Makkah station in Ar Rusayfah, about 3 km from the Haram, still needing a car to the hotel with all that luggage.

Our honest rule: two people, light bags, no rush — take the train. A family, a lot of luggage, a night arrival, or elderly parents — take the car.

Ihram on arrival

If you are coming for Umrah, you enter ihram before you cross the miqat, and flying in means that happens on the aircraft or at the airport rather than on this road. Most airlines announce the approach to the miqat; many pilgrims change at their last transit airport.

This matters for the car only in one practical way: tell us if you will be in ihram, so the driver keeps the air conditioning sensible and does not offer a scented towel. Small thing, easily got wrong.

Send your flight number, date, terminal if you know it, number of passengers and your Makkah hotel. We confirm the vehicle and the fare before the day. Nothing is charged up front — you pay the driver or transfer to us.
