Madinah Airport Transfer

This is the last thing you do in Madinah, and it is the one people leave until the morning of the flight. The drive itself is short. What catches travellers out is everything that happens after the car door closes behind them.

What it costs

One fare for the vehicle, from your hotel door. The SUV is worth its SAR 30 over the sedan if you are four people with four large cases going home — the sedan seats you, but the boot decides it.

The drive

Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport sits about 20 km from the Prophet's Mosque, and Saudipedia gives the journey as around twenty-five minutes by road. The airport operator markets thirty. Either way it is a short run on good roads.

The airport is open twenty-four hours, including customs and immigration, so a 3am departure is normal here and your driver will be there for it.

Why you should leave earlier than the drive suggests

The current terminal opened in 2015 and was designed for eight million passengers a year. In 2024 it handled 10.9 million. That gap is not an abstraction — it is the check-in hall on an Umrah-season morning.

We will not tell you to arrive three hours early, because the airport does not say that. No official airport or GACA page publishes a recommended arrival time or a counter-closing time, whatever the travel blogs claim. What actually makes people late is their airline's bag-drop cut-off, and that is set by the airline, not the airport.

So: look up your own airline's cut-off, then work backwards, then add slack for the queue. Tell us the time you want to be at the terminal and we will be outside your hotel to make it.

One thing worth knowing for the years ahead — a separate domestic terminal is under construction, due by the end of 2027, which will move some flights and some drop-off points. Until then it is one passenger terminal for domestic and international alike.

Zamzam: the thing most people get wrong

More departures go badly over Zamzam water than over anything else, and there are three separate rules to trip on.

• It cannot go in the cabin. Not five litres, not any size — the standard 100 ml liquids rule settles it at the security gate.
• You cannot pack it inside your own suitcase. GACA has instructed airlines operating from Saudi airports not to allow it. In practice the sealed container is handed over separately at check-in.
• The free allowance is your airline's rule, not a national one. Saudia carries one 5-litre bottle free, and only from Jeddah and Madinah. flynas allows a 5-litre container from Jeddah, Madinah and Taif but wants proof of Umrah through the Nusuk app. Other carriers differ again.

The station is not the airport

Madinah has a Haramain High Speed Railway station, and it is not at the airport. It sits in Knowledge Economic City, about 7 km from the Prophet's Mosque, and there is no rail link between it and MED. Only Jeddah's airport has a Haramain station.

People do book a transfer to the wrong one. If you are catching a train, say station; if you are catching a plane, say airport. They are different parts of the city.
