Hegra Guided Heritage Tour

Hegra — Mada'in Salih — was the southern city of the Nabataeans, the same people who cut Petra out of the rock 500 km to the north. It became Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. What survives is not a town but a necropolis: 111 monumental tombs cut into sandstone outcrops standing loose in open desert, 94 of them carved with elaborate facades.

You cannot just turn up

This is the single most important practical fact. Hegra is a protected archaeological site and there is no independent access. Every visit is booked through Experience AlUla, and you travel into the site on their shuttle with an official rawi — a storyteller-guide trained for the site.

Book ahead. In the cool months the tours fill, and turning up at the visitor centre hoping for a place is how people end up not seeing Hegra at all.

What you actually see

The standard tour runs about two and a half hours and stops at four or five outcrops:

• Qasr al-Farid, the Lonely Castle — a single vast tomb carved into a freestanding rock and never finished. You can see exactly where the carvers stopped, which is somehow more affecting than a completed one.
• Jabal al-Banat — a cluster of tombs, several commissioned by women, whose names are still legible above the doors.
• Jabal Ithlib and the Diwan — a narrow siq between rock walls leading to a chamber cut for gatherings, with niches for offerings.
• Jabal Ahmar and other groups, depending on the tour.

The inscriptions are the thing that stays with people. Nabataean text above the doorways records who built the tomb, for whom, and the fine payable by anyone who misuses it. Two thousand years later, a legal clause.

When to go

October to March. AlUla's whole season runs on that calendar: the weather is pleasant, the festivals happen, and the site is at its best in low winter light.

Summer is a different proposition. June to August the desert here reaches temperatures that make walking between outcrops genuinely unpleasant, and parts of AlUla's tourism operation wind down or shorten hours. If you must come then, take the earliest tour of the day.

Tickets

The standard day tour starts around SAR 95 per adult, with premium, private and sunrise options costing more. Book on the Experience AlUla site — it is the only official channel, and anything else is a reseller.

Do not stop at Hegra

People fly to AlUla, see Hegra, and leave. That is a waste of a flight. Within a short drive:

• Dadan — the older Lihyanite capital, with lion tombs cut high into a cliff face.
• Jabal Ikmah — an open-air library of ancient inscriptions in a canyon, inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.
• AlUla Old Town — a mud-brick town abandoned within living memory, partly restored, best at night.
• Elephant Rock — the sandstone arch that looks precisely like its name, floodlit after dark with a sunken lounge beneath.
• Maraya — the world's largest mirrored building, sitting in the valley reflecting the cliffs.

Two or three days is the right length for AlUla. One is a rush.

Practical notes

• Closed shoes and a hat. The ground is sand and loose rock, and there is very little shade at the outcrops.
• Take water even though the shuttle carries some.
• Do not touch or climb the facades. Guides will stop you, and rightly.
• Photography is welcome; drones are not, without permission.
• AlUla has its own airport with domestic connections, and it is a long drive from anywhere else — around four hours from Madinah.

Getting to AlUla

Most visitors fly in. From Madinah the drive is roughly four hours each way on good road, which some travellers combine with an Umrah trip — a private car makes that practical, since there is no useful public transport on that route.
