Planning a Trip to AlUla

AlUla is Saudi Arabia's heritage jewel — a sandstone valley in the north-west holding Hegra, the country's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside ancient kingdoms, an oasis Old Town and some of the region's best desert stays. It rewards planning, because the sites are spread out and the headline attraction, Hegra, is visited only on a booked tour. Here is how to put a trip together.

When should you go to AlUla?

Go in the cool season, roughly October to March, when daytime temperatures are comfortable and the sites are pleasant to walk. This window also overlaps the AlUla Moments festival season (concerts, art, balloons and the Winter at Tantora heritage events, usually December–March). Summer (June–August) is very hot — often 40 °C+ — so outdoor sites are limited to early morning and evening. How to get to AlUla

Two ways: fly into AlUla's Prince Abdul Majeed bin Abdulaziz Airport (ULH) — domestic flights from Riyadh and Jeddah, with some seasonal international routes — or drive about 3–3.5 hours (~300 km) from Madinah, the most common overland route for pilgrims extending their trip. Within AlUla the sites are far apart and served by a hop-on shuttle in the main heritage area, but a private SUV or van with a driver is the most flexible way to link them at your own pace, especially with family. How many days do you need?

Two to three days is the sweet spot: a day for Hegra and the Nabataean tombs, a day for Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and the Old Town, and time for Elephant Rock at sunset and a canyon experience. One rushed day only scratches the surface; four-plus lets you add hot-air ballooning, stargazing or the Sharaan nature reserve.

The big four (and how to see them)

• Hegra (Madāʾin Ṣāliḥ) — over 100 monumental Nabataean rock-cut tombs, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. You visit on a booked, rawi-guided tour (with a shuttle) — you cannot drive in and wander freely — so reserve ahead through Experience AlUla or a listed operator.
• Dadan — capital of the ancient Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, with lion tombs carved high in the cliff.
• Jabal Ikmah — an open-air “library” of hundreds of pre-Arabic inscriptions in a canyon.
• AlUla Old Town — a restored mud-brick labyrinth of some 900 houses, with cafés, artisans and the citadel view.

Where to stay

Three broad choices: desert camps and luxury resorts in the Ashar valley and Nabataean-canyon settings (the splurge, with dark-sky stargazing); Old Town heritage stays and boutique hotels for character; and town hotels for value and convenience. Book early for the festival season, when the best camps sell out months ahead.

Sample 2-day itinerary

1. Day 1: arrive and settle; late afternoon at Elephant Rock for sunset; evening in AlUla Old Town for dinner and the lit citadel.
2. Day 2: morning Hegra guided tour (booked); midday break in the heat; afternoon Dadan and Jabal Ikmah; optional Maraya or a stargazing session after dark.
