Taif Rose Farm Tour

Taif grows roses on terraced hillsides at around 1,700 metres, and has done for centuries. There are said to be more than two thousand farms in the district. In season the whole valley smells of it.

The season is the whole point

The Taifi rose, a damask variety with thirty-odd petals, blooms from about April to June, with the peak usually in April and early May. Picking starts before sunrise, because the oil concentration in the petals falls as the sun rises and the flowers open. By nine in the morning the day's harvest is already at the distillery.

If you come in that window, you can watch the fields being picked. If you come in October, you will see terraces of green bushes and a distillery not running. Farms still welcome visitors year-round and will show you the process — just go in with the right expectation.

How the oil is made

The method has barely changed. Petals go into large copper vessels with water, sealed and set over a fire. The steam carries the aromatic oil into a condenser, then into glass flasks where the oil separates and floats on top of the rose water beneath. The distiller draws it off with a syringe, a few grams at a time.

The arithmetic explains the price. It takes on the order of tens of thousands of roses to produce a single small vial of pure oil. The rose water left behind is not waste — it is bottled and sold, and it is what most kitchens in the Hijaz use.

Where it goes

Taif rose oil has long been used in the annual washing of the interior of the Kaaba, mixed into the rosewater and oud used for the ceremony. It also supplies perfume houses in Europe, which is why a small district in the Saudi mountains turns up in the ingredient list of scents sold in Paris.

Buying it without being taken for a ride

• Pure Taifi rose oil is expensive. If a price looks like a bargain, it is not pure.
• Buy at the farm or a reputable shop in Taif, not from a roadside stall on the mountain road.
• Ask to smell it. Real oil is deep and slightly green; synthetic smells like soap.
• Rose water is inexpensive, genuinely useful and travels well. It is the sensible gift.
• Small vials of oil come sealed. Check the seal.

What a visit involves

Three hours covers the drive out, a walk through the terraces, the distillery, and the shop. Bin Salman Farm is the best known and set up for visitors; several smaller family farms also open their doors. In season, arrive early — the distillation happens in the morning and the afternoon is quiet.

Practical notes

• Taif is cool. In spring mornings it can be genuinely cold on the terraces at dawn. Bring a layer.
• Wear shoes for uneven ground; the terraces are farms, not gardens.
• Ask before photographing the workers.
• Most farms are a drive from central Taif and need a car.

Pair it with

Roses in the morning, then the Al Hada cable car or the Al Shafa viewpoints in the afternoon. Pilgrims usually come up from Makkah for the day and add the Taif Ziyarat — it is the same road.
