Taif City Guide: Roses, Mountains & Cool Air

Taif sits high in the Sarawat mountains, a world away from the heat below — a city of rose farms, orchards, cool air and mountain views, and a beloved escape for pilgrims and Saudis alike. Its altitude gives it a gentle climate almost year-round, and its roses give it a fragrance and a heritage found nowhere else in the Kingdom. Here is what to see. The roses of Taif

Taif is famous across the region for its damask roses, distilled into precious rose water and oil that have been prized for centuries. During the harvest (roughly April–May), farms and distilleries open to visitors — you can watch the petals being processed and buy rose water to take home, and the whole city seems scented. It's the most magical time to come.

Al-Hada & the cable car

The Al-Hada mountain road, with its dramatic switchbacks and viewpoints, leads to the Al-Hada cable car that descends toward Al-Kar tourist park — a highlight for families, with sweeping escarpment views on the way down. The drive itself is memorable, and the cooler air at the top is a relief after the lowlands.

When to go

Taif is pleasant much of the year thanks to its altitude, but spring (rose season) and the mild months are best. It's cooler than Makkah year-round — bring a light layer, especially in the evening and up the mountain. See the best time to visit.

Taif's proximity — about 90 km from Makkah — makes it a perfect day trip or overnight between or after your rites, a cool, restful contrast to the heat and crowds below.
