Dammam

Dammam is a working city. Most people who fly here are coming for oil, logistics or a meeting, and the ones who are not are usually passing through to Bahrain. Planning a trip here is mostly a question of where to sleep and how to move.

One metropolitan area, three names

Dammam, Dhahran and Khobar run into each other with no real gap. People treat them as separate cities and they are separate municipalities, but for a visitor they are one place with a twenty-minute drive across it.

Roughly: Dammam is administration and the port, Dhahran is Aramco and Ithra, Khobar is the corniche, the restaurants and the evening. Where you stay is a question of which of those you need to be near.

Where to base yourself

If your meetings are in Dammam or at the port, stay in Dammam. If they are at Aramco, Dhahran puts you closest. For everything else, most visitors are happier in Khobar, because that is where the evening happens and the drive back at nine at night is short.

What there is to see

Honestly, not a great deal in Dammam itself. What there is nearby:

• Ithra in Dhahran, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. A serious museum, library and cinema complex, and the strongest single reason to spend a day here rather than an evening.
• Half Moon Bay, the beach the region actually uses, south of the city.
• Tarout Island and Qatif, for layers of history considerably older than the oil.
• The corniche at Khobar, twenty minutes away.

When to come

November to March. The Gulf coast is humid as well as hot, and the summer here is genuinely unpleasant outdoors in a way the dry interior is not. Business travel runs year-round because it is all indoors and air-conditioned, but nobody chooses August for a visit.

Shamal winds can blow dust through the region in spring, occasionally badly enough to affect flights.

Getting there and around

King Fahd International serves the region and is a long way out of the city, which surprises first-time visitors. Allow more time than the map suggests, in both directions.

There is no metro. Distances between the three cities are short but not walkable, and a car is effectively required. We quote the Eastern Province on request rather than from our fixed card — message us with the dates and we will send a fare. For a team over several days, corporate accounts are simpler than booking each ride.

Crossing to Bahrain

The King Fahd Causeway runs about 25 km from Khobar to Al Jasra. It is busy at weekends and around holidays, and queue times vary enormously. Check your visa position for both countries before setting out, and do not plan a tight connection on the far side. Our land border guide covers what the crossing involves.

Where it fits

Rarely as a holiday and often as work, with a weekend attached. If you have a spare day, spend it at Ithra and an evening on the Khobar corniche. The Eastern Province guide covers the region properly.
