Best Time to Visit Each Saudi City: A Month-by-Month Guide

Short answer
Visit Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, Riyadh and AlUla between November and March for the most comfortable weather. Go to the Asir highlands around Abha in summer (June–September), when the mountains are cool and misty while the lowlands exceed 45°C. Taif is best in spring for the rose harvest; AlUla's Winter at Tantora festival peaks December–January.
Key takeaways
- ✓Most of Saudi Arabia is best November–March.
- ✓Abha and the Asir mountains are the summer exception — cool and green Jun–Sep.
- ✓AlUla peaks Oct–April, with the Winter at Tantora festival around Dec–Jan.
- ✓Around Umrah, plan against Ramadan crowds and the Hajj restriction.
- ✓June–August lowland heat exceeds 45°C — sightsee early and travel by AC car.
Saudi Arabia is a big country with a lot of different climates. On the same January day it can be a mild 22°C in Jeddah, cold at night out in the AlUla desert, and cool and green up in the Asir mountains. Picking the right city for the right month is the difference between an easy trip and a sweaty, exhausting one. This is how the seasons break down, region by region.
The holy cities and western region: Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah
The Hijaz is hot for much of the year and humid on the coast. The most comfortable window is November to March, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and evenings cool. Umrah is performed year-round, but the cooler months make tawaf and long days at the Haram far easier — see our first-Umrah tips for pacing advice in any season.
Two timing notes matter more than the weather: Ramadan brings enormous spiritual reward but also the biggest crowds and highest prices, and the Hajj period restricts Umrah entirely. Plan around both. Jeddah, as the coastal gateway, is muggy in summer but delightful on the Corniche from late autumn to early spring.
Riyadh and the central region
The capital is high desert: very hot and dry in summer, and properly pleasant from October to March. That cooler window is also when Riyadh's event calendar fills up — Riyadh Season, concerts and outdoor dining. It's the best time to pair the city with a weekend trip to Edge of the World or Diriyah.
AlUla and the north-west
AlUla's desert is spectacular but extreme: scorching summer days and cold winter nights. The sweet spot is October to April, and the peak of its cultural calendar is the Winter at Tantora festival, which in the 2025–26 season ran mid-December into early January with concerts, heritage events and dining across the old oasis. For families, our AlUla family guide covers pacing the cooler mornings.
Taif and the western highlands
Perched above Makkah, Taif is cooler than the lowlands year-round and famous for its rose harvest, roughly March–April. It's a comfortable escape in spring and summer and an easy add-on to a Makkah trip — compared side by side with AlUla in our AlUla vs Taif weekend guide.
Abha and the Asir mountains
This is the exception that surprises everyone. While the rest of the country bakes, the Asir highlands around Abha are cool, green and often misty in summer (June–September) — which is exactly when Gulf families flock there. If you're travelling in the hot months and want relief, this is where to go.
