What to Pack for Umrah: The Complete Checklist (Men & Women)

Packing for Umrah is a balancing act. You want enough to stay comfortable and to respect ihram, but not so much that you are dragging a heavy case through crowds and onto the Haramain train. Treat the list below as your master copy, then cut it down to suit your trip. All of it fits into a carry-on plus a daypack.

Ihram and clothing

• Ihram garments (men): two white sheets, plus a spare set — they get dirty and wet.
• Modest clothing (women): loose, opaque abayas or long garments; ihram for women is ordinary modest dress, not the two-sheet garment.
• An ihram belt with a small zip pocket for documents and cash (men).
• Comfortable, modest day clothing for the hotel and Ziyarat.
• A light scarf or shawl for air-conditioned spaces and, for women, easy coverage.
• A small prayer mat and, if you wish, a folding one for outside the mosque.

Footwear

• Easy slip-on sandals, already broken in — you'll remove them constantly.
• A drawstring shoe bag to carry sandals through the mataf (losing shoes at a gate is common).
• Comfortable closed shoes for longer Ziyarat walks.

Toiletries (all unscented for ihram)

• Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant.
• Unscented lip balm and moisturiser — the climate is very dry.
• Unscented wet wipes and tissues.
• Toothbrush and miswak.
• Nail clippers (for after you exit ihram), a small towel, and a comb.

Health and comfort kit

• Personal medication in original packaging, plus a copy of any prescription.
• Basic first aid: plasters for blisters, pain relief, rehydration salts, anti-diarrhoeal.
• Hand sanitiser and a couple of face masks for dense crowds.
• A refillable water bottle — refill with Zamzam and water throughout the day.
• Sunblock and sunglasses for daytime Ziyarat (avoid scented sunblock in ihram).

Documents and money

• Passport, visa printout, and Nusuk/booking confirmations — printed and on your phone.
• Vaccination certificate if required for your route.
• A little local cash for small purchases; a card for larger ones.
• Photocopies of your passport kept separately from the original.

Tech

• Phone, charger and a power bank (easy to forget, hard to do without).
• A universal adapter (Saudi Arabia uses UK-style Type G sockets).
• A local eSIM or plan so you can reach your driver and use maps.

The daypack: what to carry each day

You won't take your whole case to the Haram. Pack a slim daypack each morning with: water bottle, sandals in their bag, phone and power bank, a light scarf, a copy of your documents, any medication, and a small amount of cash. That is all you need for a day of worship.

What you can leave at home

• Heavy toiletries — buy unscented travel sizes instead.
• Scented anything (perfume, aftershave, scented wipes) for use during ihram.
• Bulky clothing — you'll mostly wear ihram and light modest dress.
• Valuables and jewellery you'd be anxious to lose in a crowd.
