Second Umrah from Masjid ʿĀʾishah (Tanʿīm): How It Works

Once you have completed your Umrah and left ihram, you are in Makkah without ihram. To perform another Umrah, you must leave the sacred precinct (the boundary of the Ḥaram) to a place of ḥill and re-enter ihram — and the nearest, easiest point is Masjid ʿĀʾishah at Tanʿīm. Here is how it works, what it costs, and an honest note on the scholarly discussion around repeating Umrah in one trip. Why Tanʿīm?

Tanʿīm is the closest point outside the Ḥaram boundary to Makkah — about 7–8 km from the Grand Mosque — with the well-known Masjid ʿĀʾishah marking it. It is named for the report that ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sent there to enter ihram for a second Umrah, which is why it became the standard place Makkans and visitors go to begin another Umrah. Being so close to Makkah, it is a short, easy trip compared with the more distant miqats.

Step by step

1. Perform ghusl or at least wuḍūʾ and prepare your ihram at your hotel before you set off.
2. Travel to Masjid ʿĀʾishah (Tanʿīm) — a short ride from central Makkah.
3. At the mosque, enter ihram: make the intention for Umrah and begin the Talbiyah.
4. Return to the Ḥaram and perform ṭawāf, saʿy and trimming as you did the first time.

Transport & cost

It is a short trip — many take a taxi or ride-hailing car — but a pre-booked car that waits at Tanʿīm while you enter ihram and then returns you to the Ḥaram is the smoothest option, especially for a group or elders who would otherwise wait in the heat for a return ride. A note on repeating Umrah

Scholars differ on performing multiple Umrahs in a single visit. Many permit it, while others — including a well-known view — hold that it is better to spend the time in ṭawāf and worship in the Ḥaram rather than repeatedly leaving to Tanʿīm, noting that the Prophet ﷺ and the companions did not, as a rule, repeat Umrah on the same trip in that way. Both positions are held by respected scholars; the point is not to treat a second Umrah as an obvious “more is better,” but to choose with knowledge and, ideally, ask a scholar which is best for you and your circumstances.

Keeping the spirit right

Whatever you decide, keep the focus on sincerity and the quality of your worship rather than the count. A single, deeply-felt Umrah and long hours of ṭawāf and du'ā may benefit the heart more than several hurried repetitions.
