Women's Umrah Guide: Mahram Rules, Dress & Rulings

Umrah is fully open to women, and recent rule changes have made it far more accessible. Do women need a mahram?

In a major change, women of all ages may now perform Umrah without a mahram (male guardian) under current Saudi rules, often travelling in an organised group. This has opened Umrah to many women who previously could not go, and groups make the practical side — transport, hotels, permits — straightforward. Ihram dress for women

There is no special ihram garment for women — you wear ordinary modest, loose clothing. Per most rulings, in the ihram state the face and hands are left uncovered (no niqāb or gloves), while covering from non-mahram men by drawing the khimār or scarf when needed. Menstruation: what you can and cannot do

A menstruating woman still enters ihram at the miqat and makes the intention and Talbiyah — menstruation does not prevent that, so do not delay it. She may do everything except ṭawāf (which requires purity), so she waits until her period ends, performs ghusl, then does ṭawāf and saʿy to complete Umrah. Key points:

• Enter ihram anyway at the miqat — do not miss the intention because you are unsure.
• Delay ṭawāf until pure; you remain in ihram until you complete it, keeping to the prohibitions meanwhile.
• She may make du'ā and dhikr throughout, and be present at the sites as rulings allow.
• If time is very short before your departure, ask a scholar about your options — do not guess, as the correct answer depends on your exact circumstances.

Women's prayer areas & the Rawdah
