Top Weekend Getaways from Riyadh: 6 Escapes Worth the Drive

Riyadh sits right in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula, which makes it a handy base for weekends away. Desert cliffs, UNESCO heritage, old mud-brick villages, camps under a huge night sky: all of it is within a couple of hours of the city. 1. Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) — half day

The classic Riyadh day trip: a 300-metre escarpment that drops away to a horizon so wide it feels like the planet just ends. It's around 90 minutes from the city, and the final approach is off-road, so a 4x4 with an experienced driver is essential. Go for late afternoon and stay for sunset — it's unforgettable.

2. Diriyah — in-city heritage

Minutes from central Riyadh, Diriyah is the UNESCO-listed birthplace of the first Saudi state, its restored mud-brick district of At-Turaif glowing at night. Pair the history with the district's cafés and restaurants for an easy half-day or evening that needs no long drive.

3. A desert camp — overnight

An hour or two out of the city, desert camps offer dune drives, campfires and some of the clearest night skies you'll ever see. It's the easiest way to swap city lights for stars without a long journey — ideal for a Friday night escape.

4. Ushaiqer Heritage Village — day trip

About two hours north, Ushaiqer is one of the Kingdom's oldest and best-preserved traditional towns — labyrinthine mud-brick alleys, painted doors and palm groves. It's a quiet, atmospheric contrast to Riyadh's glass towers and rewards a slow half-day wander.

5. Al-Kharj and the countryside — day trip

South-east of the capital, Al-Kharj offers farms, springs and open countryside — a gentle, family-friendly day out that shows a greener, slower side of central Arabia.
