Madinah Date Farm & Market Visit

Madinah grows dates the way Bordeaux grows grapes: seriously, with named varieties, strong opinions and a large price gap between the good and the very good. Roughly a million and a half palms sit on the city's fringes. Walking one of the groves takes an hour and changes what you buy for the rest of the trip.

The varieties, and which is which

• Ajwa — small, near-black, soft, with a mild fig-like taste. The one with the hadith attached, the one people bring home as a gift, and by a distance the priciest.
• Sukkari — golden, crumbly, very sweet. The name means sugary and it earns it. Best eaten fresh.
• Safawi — dark, long, less sweet than Sukkari, with a slightly savoury edge. Many people prefer it to Ajwa and pay far less.
• Mabroom — long, chewy, amber-brown. Good with coffee.
• Anbara — large, meaty, expensive, sold by the piece as much as by the kilo.

Taste before you buy. Sellers expect it and will offer. A box of Ajwa bought without tasting is the most common regret pilgrims bring home.

What a farm visit is like

You walk among the palms, someone explains pollination, the harvest cycle and why the varieties differ, and then you sit down to a tray of dates with Arabic coffee. The tasting is generous — genuinely a light meal. Many farms have a small shop attached selling at prices below the tourist stalls.

Entry to the farms is usually free. What a booked visit buys you is the transport, a guide who can explain what you are looking at, and a farm that is expecting you rather than one that waves you off.

The date market

Most visits pair the grove with Madinah's central date market, which is a large covered hall of stall after stall. Hundreds of varieties, all grades, plus date syrup, date paste, stuffed dates with almonds, and the honey and nuts sold alongside.

Practical advice for the market:

• Walk the length of it once before buying anything. Prices vary noticeably between stalls for the same grade.
• Ask which grade you are being shown. Ajwa comes in several, and the difference is real.
• Vacuum-sealed boxes travel better in a suitcase and are usually the same price.

Timing

Harvest runs July to September, when you can watch the picking and the fresh rutab is on sale. That is also the hottest stretch of the year in Madinah, so go early morning or after Asr. Outside harvest the farms still welcome visitors and the market runs all year — you simply see a working grove rather than a busy one.

Fitting it in

The market is a natural final stop on the Madinah Ziyarat round, so if you are booking a car for the mosques anyway, say you want the dates included and it costs you nothing but half an hour.
