Saudi Arabia’s best-known experiences sit in five places. Makkah and Madinah have the Ziyarat sites and the museums of Islamic history. Jeddah has the UNESCO-listed Al Balad and the Red Sea. Riyadh has Diriyah and the Edge of the World. AlUla has Hegra, the Kingdom’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most are half-day trips, and the ones we run ourselves are priced per vehicle rather than per person.
What there is to do in each city, and how long to allow.
Most visitors to Makkah are there for Umrah, so the question is really what to do between prayers. The main options are a Ziyarat tour by private car to the historic sites around the city, the Revelation Exhibition and Holy Quran Museum at the foot of Jabal al-Noor, the Museum of the Prophet's Biography in the Clock Towers complex, and the Clock Tower museum itself. Each is a short trip rather than a full day, which is what makes them fit around prayer times.
4 to do in Makkah →Madinah's sites are spread around the city rather than concentrated in one place. The standard Ziyarat circuit takes in Masjid Quba, Masjid al-Qiblatayn, the Seven Mosques and Uhud in about three hours. Beyond that, the Dar Al Madinah museum tells the city's story, the date farms and market are a genuinely local hour, and Badr — the battlefield roughly 150 km away — is a full day.
4 to do in Madinah →Jeddah splits neatly into three kinds of day. The historic one is Al Balad, the UNESCO-listed old town of coral-stone houses and carved wooden balconies. The waterfront one is the Corniche, King Fahd's Fountain and the Floating Mosque. The Red Sea one is snorkelling or diving out of Obhur. With one day, most people combine Al Balad with a drive along the Corniche.
